Bombe Chest

The flowing curves, breathtaking veneer, and large drawers make this elegant chest a fashionable and functional piece of furniture.

Traditionally, bombé chests required large, 4"-thick slabs of mahogany that were sculpted into the bulging curves. Today, that would put the cost out of reach for most of us. So with this design, we made the bombé style accessible by using materials that are affordable and easy to find. But don’t worry. The choices won’t compromise the quality or appearance of the chest. We used painted poplar for the primary wood and cabinet-grade plywood for the curved panels. A straightforward kerf-bending technique makes shaping the curved panels a breeze.
