Scroll-Sawn Jewelry Box

The elegant patterns on this box are first cut out with a scroll saw. Then the panel is glued to a backer board for a unique, almost-carved look.

Carved boxes always intrigue me. It’s not what’s inside — it’s the small details and the craftsmanship that make them irresistible. Show me a carved box, and I just have to pick it up and give it a closer look. I’ve always wanted to make a carved box, but there’s been a hitch. I haven’t done much carving. So when I set out to design this jewelry box, I tried to get around this by giving it the “look” of a carved box — without the carving. The solution wasn’t difficult. I created thin scroll-sawn panels for the sides of the box. -These are backed up with solid panels. The end result doesn’t look like a typical scroll saw project. It looks more like it’s been carved.
